Pro-nuclear activists and organizations have issued an urgent appeal to their members across Europe to engage in the European Commission’s (EC) public consultation on Small Modular Reactors (SMR). They warn that the initiative, which aims to accelerate the deployment of SMR technology, is under attack by a coordinated campaign of anti-nuclear activists and claim that anti-nuclear groups have flooded the EC’s consultations on SMRs.

The organization “Voices of Nuclear” warns that the European Commission’s “Call for Evidence” regarding SMRs has been inundated with “baseless anti-nuclear comments.”

“We are writing to alert you to a recent, coordinated effort by anti-nuclear activists to undermine one of the few European initiatives supporting nuclear energy,” the letter addressed to supporters stated.

Attack on the “Call for Evidence”

Following the publication of the strategic action plan for the European SMR Alliance earlier this month, the EC launched a “Call for Evidence” to gather feedback from the public and interested stakeholders. According to the warnings, this platform has been “flooded with hundreds of baseless anti-nuclear comments.”

“Voices of Nuclear,” the organization behind the appeal, points out that the Commission must publish a synthesis of this Call and take its outcome into consideration when coordinating the Alliance’s activities. They therefore warn that a negative outcome could significantly “undermine the resources” allocated to the initiative, which are already scarce.

Call for a Collective Response

The organization is calling on its members to mount an effective and collective response before the deadline expires by:

  • Encouraging all members to submit positive feedback to the EC’s “Call for Evidence” (the call can be accessed via this link).
  • Sharing the message with their community and inviting everyone to post supportive comments.

The European SMR Alliance brings together key EU stakeholders—including industries, unions, civil society organizations, and industry associations—working to facilitate the deployment of SMRs in Europe.

“Seeing such a large-scale initiative emerging from European institutions is a very positive sign of the shifting understanding of the role of nuclear energy in achieving the EU’s climate, environmental, and economic goals,” the statement concludes. “But if the public support, which we know exists (over 62% of European citizens support nuclear energy), does not manifest, it could significantly diminish this momentum.”

The organization also extends its invitation to readers in the region to submit their feedback.
