Attack on Bushehr: Rosatom Official Statement

The Russian state corporation Rosatom announced today that an attack has occurred on one of the buildings within the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant complex in Iran. We transmit the statement in its entirety:

Statement Regarding the Situation at the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant

Today (March 17), at 18:11 Moscow time, an attack was carried out on the territory adjacent to the metrology service building at the Bushehr NPP industrial site, in the immediate vicinity of the active power unit. There are no injuries among the personnel of the state corporation Rosatom. The radiation situation at the site is within normal limits. This is the first recorded attack on the nuclear power plant territory since the beginning of the conflict.

The safety of human lives is our absolute priority. Previously, we had already partially reduced the number of personnel at the construction site of power units No. 2 and 3 of the Bushehr NPP. Approximately 250 employees and their family members have been safely evacuated from Iran. As a preventive measure, even before the start of the armed conflict, the children of employees were evacuated. Currently, about 480 of our colleagues remain on-site. Preparations for a third wave of personnel evacuation are underway.

Our principled position: Opening fire on active nuclear energy facilities represents a blatant disregard for key rules and principles of international security. We categorically condemn this event and call upon the parties in the conflict to make every possible effort to de-escalate the situation in the area of the Bushehr NPP.
