With this legislation, Croatia establishes a strategic goal: for nuclear energy to secure at least 30% of the country’s total annual electricity needs by 2040, positioning the nuclear sector, alongside renewables, as the bedrock of energy stability

Foto: Wikimedia

Šušnjar emphasized that this law does not constitute a final investment decision for the construction of any specific facility. Instead, it regulates the prerequisites for the development, research, and application of nuclear technology. The primary focus is on building regulatory capacities, professional oversight, and expertise regarding technologies that are rapidly evolving globally.

“The issue of energy security, system resilience, and long-term stability of supply has become an integral part of strategic discussions in many countries, especially within our broader regional environment,” the Minister stated.

The Link Between Data Centers and the AI Industry

During the parliamentary debate, questions were raised regarding the connection between this legislation and the “Pantheon” AI development center project in Topusko. We have previously reported on this project, which represents one of the most significant investment ventures in the region. Although the Minister noted that work on the law began independently of that project, he was explicit about the critical importance of energy for the modern economy.

“If we want to develop industry, education, and that segment of the economy related to data centers, we must have energy. Without energy, there is no industry, no education, and no healthcare,” Šušnjar pointed out.

Broad Support and Criticism of “Green” Policies

The proposed law received support from the majority of parliamentary groups. Proponents assessed that nuclear energy provides a reliable and secure supply while drastically reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Particularly sharp criticism was directed at previous German policies of phasing out nuclear plants, which were cited as a cause of the severe economic crisis in that country.

Source: Novi List

S.A.

Croatia’s Minister of Economy, Ante Šušnjar, presented the final draft of the Act on the Development of Nuclear Energy for

[23,19
114
post-3175","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-studije-slucaja","category-vesti","tag-hrvatska
["GET
